In a genre of music that is dominated by the DJ, London born Sam Mollison has led the way in songwriting and live performance within the infinite boundaries of Progressive House for almost a decade. Arguably the most influential and important club night of the 90's saw fit to play Sam's offering of House folklore, 'Will you love me in the Morning', as the signature tune at the end of their eventful Saturday nights back in 1992. In the Northern English town of Mansfield, two young DJ's were changing the face of the House Music establishment by pioneering the ground breaking sound of Progressive House in that club. The DJ's were Sasha and John Digweed, the club, Renaissance. Due to the impact the song had made during the peak of Renaissance, Sam was invited to perform at the Renaissance first birthday party along with 'Mpeople' in early 93. When the dust had settled on another memorable occasion, Sasha and Sam had both expressed an opinion to work with each other some day. That day came within six months and produced the progressive House classics 'Magic' and 'Higher Ground', gaining top twenty National chart success in the U.K. along with more critical acclaim, whilst helping to change the way the public viewed progressive House. This was also around the time when Sam's legendary live performances began to register worldwide. Sam found himself performing constantly for a year due to the success of Sasha's 'Qat collection' which incorporated the two tracks, and the outstanding level of his level of performances. By the end of 94, the constant performing was beginning to take its toll and Sam needed to find a point of inspiration that would see him realize his dream of recording and releasing a solo album. That dream seemed to come in the form of Chrysalis label Cooltempo. However Sam recorded an album without it ever being released due to the label changing its focus under instructions from new owners E.M.I. The true point of inspiration did in fact come from Orlando, Florida. Sam having being invited to appear at 'Aahz' at the Beacham theatre in Orlando alongside Sasha and John Digweed in the spring of 94, and having been totally captivated by Orlando's beauty and warmth, he decided that Orlando was the place that somehow felt most like home to him. After making subsequent visits, and whilst recording another Classic, 'CRY', in the summer of 95 with Jimmy Van M in Orlando, he made the move to Florida permanent. He set up his own label, First In Flight, and set about embarking on a journey that would see him writing, collaborating and working alongside such Progressive House Icons as Jimmy Van M / Sean Cusick (Freelance Icebreakers), Chris Fortier / Neil Kolo (Fade), James Reid / Lee Softley (Blue Amazon), Bill Hamel (Insight), Jesse Skeens (Medway), Justin Scot Dixon (Voyageur), and most recently, Cass and Slide. Working with all these talented people has given him the ammunition to take his live performances to another level also. His electrifying show is known throughout club land as being something rather special. Playing live keyboards alongside the execution of flawless vocals, which compliment thumping house tracks in a non -stop performance. Having worked with so many of the now established DJ / Producer's of the genre, Sam set to the task of concentrating on the recording of his most definitive work to date. This new album offering is well over due, but its importance is by no means understated. Sam has relished the challenge of putting all that undoubted experience and knowledge together in a show of Vocal and Songwriting strength and a return to some of his more Global House roots. The now completed album, entitled 'Sacrifice', makes its debut in the spring of 2002, exclusively on First In Flight. Sam's past successes, and there have been a few, have only ever been the prelude to the exciting new work with which we now await. |
